But with urbanisation comes an increase in transport demand and industrial activity, which can lead to worsening levels of air quality.
The World Health Organisation estimates that most of the world’s population lives in places with air quality below acceptable levels.
Industries need to demonstrate cleaner operations or risk relocation away from urban cities.
Asphalt plants located far away from cities make road surfacing operations and supply chains more complex.
More governments across the globe are implementing stringent targets to monitor and reduce air pollution.
Cleaner ways of working are needed to ensure air quality guidelines are met.

Created in our world class R&D Centre and tested in four major locations.
We have developed a new bitumen solution to minimise the impact of road paving on local air quality.
We are the first major supplier of bitumen to focus our efforts on air quality improvement.
Our tests showed that Shell Bitumen FreshAir reduced the levels of sulphur oxides (SOx), nitrogen oxides (NOx), volatile organic compounds (VOC), particulate matter (PM) and carbon monoxide (CO) by an average of 40% during asphalt production and road paving when compared to conventional bitumen.

Aborder le problème de la qualité de l’air
Les systèmes de transport sont un élément indispensable de la vie moderne, mais l’augmentation de l’urbanisation et la concentration des transports ainsi que les activités industrielles ont provoqué une baisse du niveau de la qualité de l’air.
C’est pourquoi nous avons mis au point un nouveau bitume pour réduire les émissions de gaz et de particules fines pendant les phases de production et d’application des enrobés - Shell Bitumen FreshAir. Le développement de solutions plus propres pour les travaux de revêtement des chaussées joue un rôle important dans notre approche pluraliste pour améliorer la qualité de l’air dans les villes.
Faire de la pose des chaussées une opération plus propre
Cette technologie innovante a été confirmée au cours d’essais en partenariat avec des entreprises routières et des experts en qualité de l’air dans plusieurs pays à travers le monde, dont la France. Elle permet de réduire en moyenne de 40 % les gaz et les particules fines produits lors de la production et l’application des enrobés*. Le mélange de composants inhibiteurs de Shell Bitumen FreshAir agit directement sur les composants qui sont la source des gaz, des particules** et des molécules qui génèrent des odeurs. La réaction chimique se produit in situ au niveau moléculaire, ce qui contribue à réduire les gaz et les particules fines, à minimiser le risque qu’elles se dispersent dans l’atmosphère et par conséquent à diminuer leur impact sur la qualité de l’air, tout en neutralisant les odeurs.
