Karp-Kneip, Trabet, and Shell Bitumen in France
Title: Shell Bitumen CarbonSink | TRABET
Duration: {5:09} minutes
Description:
Shell Bitumen CarbonSink, Shell’s new bio-component binder that locks carbon within roads instead of releasing it back into the atmosphere, has been used in France for the first time. Karp-Kneip Constructions led the project, where 20 tonnes of Shell Bitumen CarbonSink was used in the construction of a car park at Brumath Enrobés’s asphalt production plant in Bas-Rhin, Alsace. The asphalt for this project was laid by civil construction company, Trabet.

[Introduction]

{With over than 6,600 km of road dedicated to transport, Alsace (France) has a dynamic network that allows each of its inhabitants to move as they wish by using the bus, the car, or the bicycle. As the technology of cars has advanced to create sustainable forms of transport, so has the way in which we build and maintain our roads.
Trabet is working with Shell to deliver sustainable solutions that meet the new environmental expectations of cities and towns.}

{I have been working in the industry of public works for almost 30 years and we have been committed for a number of years to decarbonize our sector.}
{We started many years ago by recovering materials on construction sites to give them a second life. Then, more recently, we focused on tools that can improve the reduction of our carbon footprint, especially with this asphalt plant here at Brumath Enrobés, which can produce recycled asphalt, incorporating up to 100% of recycled aggregates that are calibrated with granulators and electrical screens. Of course, we manufacture these products, most often, at low temperatures to also save energy.}
{In addition to all this, we have partnered with Shell at the demand of our customers, most often local authorities, to use their biogenic product that locks part of the carbon, and it is called Shell Bitumen CarbonSink.}

{Trabet is a public works company based in Haguenau (France) that works for both public and private operators. For us, this fits perfectly into the energy transition currently underway.}

{We are very pleased to lead this project with Trabet as a partner to support the ambition to decarbonize agglomerations. Shell Bitumen CarbonSink is a new biogenic asphalt technology that locks some of the CO2 inside bitumen. It works efficiently as a carbon sink.}

{In nature, trees and plants can absorb CO2 throughout their life cycle. This is the principle of carbon sinks based on bio components. The Shell Bitumen CarbonSink is inspired by this process to contribute to the decarbonization of roads. This bitumen will allow to lock part of the CO2 in the road for at least 100 years.}

{In our urban community of Haguenau (France), which is made up of 32 towns and villages, projects are launched, they evolve, and new ones are emerging. Taking sustainability aspects into account encourages us to be innovative.}
{The company Trabet, which is located in our region, has offered us an innovative product, which allows us to decarbonize our roads.}

{Back in June 2022, we have decided, in our partnership with Shell, to use the Shell Bitumen CarbonSink product here in Brumath Enrobés. This successful experience has convinced us to make this technological leap and we now want to develop this product with local authorities who will ask for it.}

{Whether the vehicles are powered by hydrogen or electricity, one thing is certain: we will need the roads to drive. So, I think it's important to start working on technologies to help decarbonize this sector and think about how we can improve the quality of our roads.}

{From a personal point of view, I am extremely proud to have been able to participate in this partnership between Shell, Brumath Enrobés and Trabet. The people who participated gave their best and the ideas that came through really fit the strategy we want to put in place. Each of us has the responsibility and the ability to reduce our carbon footprint. Shell Bitumen CarbonSink is a key to achieving this, together with our customers.}
{Lionel Jungmann speaking}
{For me, this work is very much aligned with our goals. This achievement makes me even more proud when I explain the projects, we work on to those around me.
It is very rewarding to participate in the decarbonization of roads, and to help and support our customers in their energy transition.}
